The Medium Specifics.aa
- This is a multimedia medium. The browsing experience can be truly layered. Though there are issues of bandwidth, it is fast changing the way we communicate.
- The communication in websites needs to cater to three types of browsers- the accidental browser, the browser with cursory interest levels and the seriously interested browser.
- Your communication should cater to each of these interest levels, depending on what you are selling.
- Most of the time, copy for the web needs to be search engine optimized.
- Copy for the web needs to be simple in language as it is going to be read by as diverse an audience, with different levels of language capabilities.
- Most writing on the net should be culture neutral, as the medium is truly global.
My attitude to writing copy for the web.
If I could draw a parallel between bathing and browsing, it would be thus:
Level One:
A Sponge Bath
OR
A browser scans through the headlines in a few sections and checks out the navigation menu of the website.
Level Two:
A Shower
OR
Read thru some sections in greater detail. Something like going to the portal site and looking at the latest news and clicking on something that is of interest to him.
Level Three
A nice bubbly Bathtub
OR
Reading through a website from beginning to end (like I hope you are doing!)
Intense focus to get to know what the hell the site is all about, what this business is all about!!
I cater to all types of bathers…!!! Opps! Browsers or Readers.
